An Introduction to Band at CIS
At the Canadian International School in Abu Dhabi, students are offered group instruction on many instruments from Grade 6 onwards. The Instruments offered in band class include: flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion and electric bass.
Band is offered as the music class for all grade 6 students. The school does have an inventory of instruments for student use; however, parents are encouraged to purchase an instrument for the students to use to facilitate practice, and maximize student achievement. There are a few instrument dealers in Abu Dhabi and Dubai that sell these instruments. Please contact Mr. Dave to find out where to go to find an instrument to purchase.
Band is in its sixth year at CIS, so it is very exciting that a number of students have had the opportunity to continue with their instruments. There are grade level classes in grade 7, 8 and 9 that meet twice a week. There is also a class scheduled for the grade 10, 11 and 12 students to continue. Unfortunately, there is not time in the schedule at this point to add beginner classes for students who have not had the opportunity to learn an instrument yet. The grade 6 classes are currently the only beginner band students in the school at this time.
Performance is an important aspect of any music program; therefore there are many opportunities provided for all of the students to perform as a group. Listen for the band in the High School monthly assemblies and the Elementary School M&Ms. Most school events will have a band performing something for the entertainment of the audiences.
To embellish the music offerings of the school, there are a number of extra-curricular groups made up of band students. Currently we have a Pep Band, a Winter Band, an Advanced Brass Quartet and will soon be starting with a small Grade 6 enrichment band. Other extra-curricular groups that will be added later in the school year may include a Jazz Band and a Grade 7/8 pep band.
